Kidney Cancer: Types, Symptoms, Causes,Treatments and More

Image result for Kidney Cancer
The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs lying in the lower abdomen. They remove the waste products from the body. Kidney cancer is a disease where the cells of the kidney turn cancerous and grow out of control. It is also called as renal cancer. The exact cause of is unknown, but there are numerous risk factors such as smoking, drinking alcohol, obesity, high blood pressure, etc.

Signs and Symptoms of Kidney Cancer

There may be no symptoms in the early stages of kidney cancer. However, as the tumor grows, the following symptoms start appearing:
  • Lump on one side of the abdomen
  • Loss of appetite
  • Blood in urine
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Persistent pain on one side of the abdomen
  • Anemia
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Unexplained fever
  • Swelling in the legs
As the cancer spreads to the other parts of the body, other symptoms that set in are:
  • Extreme pain in the bones
  • Coughing up blood
  • Breathlessness

Causes and Risk Factors of Kidney Cancer

Generally, kidney cancer affects people above 40 years of age. Although the exact causes are unknown, there are certain risk factors such as:
  • Smoking: Smokers are twice as likely to develop kidney cancer as non-smokers. This is irrespective of whether you smoke cigars or cigarettes.
  • High Blood Pressure: A high blood pressure is an important factor since it can trigger uncontrolled cell growth in the kidneys.
  • Obesity: Obesity is a very common risk factor for developing almost all forms of cancer. This is especially because in obesity the body is in the continuous process of developing new cells. As a result, the cell growth may become uncontrolled leading to cancer.
  • Von Hippel Lindau Syndrome (VHL): This is a rare genetic disease caused by changes in the VHL gene. This gene instructs the body to make proteins that play a significant role in the protein complex. The main function of this complex is to degrade other proteins that are not required by the cells. In VHL syndrome, there are changes induced in the gene owing to mutation and hence, the protein degradation does not take place properly. This can be a risk factor for cancer, cysts or tumors.
  • Dialysis: While dialysis is meant for people among whom the kidneys do not function properly, a long-term dialysis is a risk factor for uncontrolled growth or accumulation of a large number of cells in the kidneys thus causing kidney cancer.
  • Occupation: Some people who come in close contact with different chemicals like iron, steel, cadmium and asbestos are at risk.
  • Gender: Men are more likely to develop kidney cancer than women.

Types of Kidney Cancer

The two most common types of kidney cancer are:
  • Renal Cell Carcinoma: It originates in the lining of proximal convoluted tubule. It is that part of the kidney that transports waste particles from the blood to the urine. It is the most common type of cancer, and about 90-95% of patients suffering from kidney cancer are affected by this type of cancer.
  • Transitional Cell Carcinoma: It occurs in the urinary system affecting kidney, bladder and other accessory organs. Only 5-10% of the cases are malignant.
In addition to the above two, there are other types of kidney cancer that are lesser known such as:
  • Clear cell sarcoma of the kidney
  • Wilms’ tumor- commonly occurring among children under the age of 5
  • Bellini duct carcinoma
  • Renal oncocytoma
  • Angiomyolipoma
  • Reninoma
Some of the extremely rare and potentially cancerous tumor includes:
  • Renal Lymphoma
  • Teratoma
  • Carcinosarcoma
  • Inverted papilloma
  • Clear cell adenocarcinoma

Tests and Diagnosis of Kidney Cancer

The various tests used to diagnose kidney cancer:
  • Blood and Urine AnalysisThis is the first step towards establishing any disease. The blood tests and urine tests give the doctor clues on the causative agent behind the various signs and symptoms.
  • ImagingOnce the blood tests establish the factor, imaging tests like Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Ultrasound or computerized tomography (CT) are performed. These tests allow the doctor to have a closer look at the kidney for tumors and other abnormalities.
  • Biopsy
    Biopsy
A biopsy is recommended to confirm the cancer and its extent. In this procedure, the doctor removes a small sample of the cells from a suspected area of the kidney and is tested in the lab for signs of cancer.

Treatments and Medications Of Kidney Cancer

There are various treatment procedures available. However, the best approach depends on the extent of the cancer, health, type of cancer and personal treatment preferences.
Surgery: This is the initial step towards kidney cancer treatment. Various surgical procedures used are:
  • Nephrectomy: In this kidney, adjacent lymph nodes and a border of the healthy tissues are removed.
  • Nephron-Sparing Surgery: This involves removing only affected tumor and instead of the whole kidney. This is a common treatment method in case of smaller kidney cancers and if the patient has only one kidney.
Non-Surgical: When surgery is not an option, the treatment procedures may include:
  • Cryoablation: This is a procedure adopted to freeze the cancer cells.
  • Radio-Frequency Ablation: While cryoablation freezes the cancerous cells, radio-frequency heats the cells thus burning them.
Precaution and Self Care
The best way to avoid any form of cancer is to adapt a healthier lifestyle. Controlling obesity, maintaining a healthy weight, controlling blood pressure and quit smoking are the best ways to reduce the risk. Post treatment procedure, the patients are advised to maintain a regular diet of fresh fruits and vegetables. They are advised to have their meals on time and avoid a sedentary lifestyle.

Acne: Types, Symptoms, Causes & Treatments

Acne is defined as a chronic skin disorder in which the hair follicles become blocked and/or inflamed. There are several variants of acne and they range from mild to severe. In almost all cases, acne appears on the face, but acne can also affect the neck, chest, and back area. Although usually not considered a dangerous medical condition, acne can cause psychological distress and even skin scarring. Teenagers are the most commonly affected group with around 85% of 16-18 year olds believed to have some form of acne. However, some people may suffer from acne well into their 30s and 40s even. Although acne usually clears on its own during one’s mid-twenties, it is important to treat acne early on to prevent scarring and self-esteem problems. Most dermatologists agree that acne is not something we should ignore and given the many treatment options we have today, there’s no reason not to treat acne. Hepatitis Virus: How To Deal With It?

Hepatitis Introduction Hepatitis virus is a versatile virus that inflames the liver. It can be transmitted through a number of ways, and not all strands of hepatitis are lethal. The liver is the second largest organ in the human body, preceded by the skin (yes, the skin is an organ). It handles certain processes when dealing with substances that you consume, and helps in creating waste from these substances, as well as building cells. Among the processes of the liver: it creates urine; digests harmful substances (like alcohol), creates red blood cells; helps regulate the glucose level within the body and creates certain amino acids, which are the building blocks of the cells. As you can see, the liver is very important is vital to our survival. Signs and Symptoms Although hepatitis virus comes in various strains, its signs and symptoms are often similar. There are two phases to the virus: The first phase is called the acute phase. The symptoms in this phase are akin to a mil...
